Synopsis /

[English / 英語] In 1942, at a Japanese POW camp on the island of Java, British officer Colonel Lawrence (Tom Conti) serves as a bridge between the captors and the captives, striving to mediate the profound cultural clash. The camp’s commander, Captain Yonoi (Ryuichi Sakamoto), finds himself obsessively drawn to a newly arrived, defiant prisoner, Major Jack Celliers (David Bowie), whose ethereal presence disrupts the rigid code of Bushido. Meanwhile, the brutal yet inexplicably human Sergeant Hara (Takeshi Kitano) develops a strange camaraderie with Lawrence. The film masterfully depicts the collision of opposing moralities, the preservation of human dignity, and the haunting bonds that transcend the boundaries of war. It asks: What is the true meaning of war? What does it take to truly understand another culture? And what lies at the very core of human nature?
