November 4, 1979: Iranian revolutionaries storm the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, taking 52 Americans hostage. But six diplomats escape and find refuge in the Canadian Ambassador’s residence. With anti-American fury at fever pitch and discovery imminent, CIA “exfiltration” specialist Tony Mendez devises the most audacious rescue plan in history: create a fake Hollywood science-fiction film called “Argo,” fly into Tehran, and extract the Americans posing as a Canadian film crew scouting locations. It’s absurd enough that it just might work. Ben Affleck directs and stars in this pulse-pounding thriller based on the declassified “Canadian Caper”—a true story so unbelievable, Hollywood could barely make it up. Winner of Best Picture at the 2013 Academy Awards.
