Synopsis / あらすじ

[English / 英語] Edward Bloom (young: Ewan McGregor / elderly: Albert Finney) has spent his entire life telling grand, fantastical adventure stories about his past. From befriending a misunderstood giant to encountering a prophetic witch and battling a legendary uncatchable fish, his tales are as unbelievable as they are enchanting. However, his son Will (Billy Crudup), a pragmatic journalist, has grown weary of these “tall tales,” feeling his father has never shown him his true self. When Edward is diagnosed with terminal cancer, Will returns home for one last chance to reconcile. He begins a journey to investigate the facts behind the fiction, discovering that while some stories are rooted in reality, others are pure imagination crafted to make life more beautiful. The film asks: What is the true meaning of “truth”? How can a father and son bridge the gap between myth and reality? And in the end, how should we choose to live and remember our lives?

Critical Reception / 批評的評価

  • Rotten Tomatoes: 76% (Critics), 89% (Audience)
  • Metacritic: 68/100 (Generally Favorable Reviews)
  • IMDb: 8.0/10
  • Eiga.com(映画.com): 4.0/5
  • Widely regarded as Tim Burton’s most emotionally mature and personally resonant film — a departure from the gothic grotesque toward something warmer and more human
  • Albert Finney’s performance as the elder Edward praised as one of the finest of his career — a man whose charisma is itself the argument the film is making
  • Ewan McGregor praised for capturing the quality of a natural storyteller: the ease, the pleasure, the slight excess that makes a story bigger than its facts
  • Helena Bonham Carter in the dual role of the witch and Jenny praised for her restraint — a performance that knows when to withhold
  • Danny Elfman’s score called among his best — gentler and more melodically generous than his usual Burton collaborations
  • Philippe Rousselot’s cinematography — warm, golden, the past always slightly more saturated than the present — praised as one of the most visually precise expressions of memory in contemporary cinema
  • Roger Ebert.com: ★★★★ “Tim Burton’s most touching film — a meditation on fathers and sons and the stories that stand between them”
  • The New York Times: “Ravishing, funny, and unexpectedly moving — Burton finds something new”
  • Variety: “A film that earns its sentiment by never flinching from the grief beneath it”
  • The Guardian: ★★★★ “Burton’s warmest and most human film — and his most fully realized”
  • Some critics found the film sentimental to the point of evasion — that its celebration of fabulation lets fathers off the hook for the distance their mythologizing creates
  • Defenders argued precisely the opposite: that the film is unflinching about the cost of Edward’s storytelling — Will’s lifelong feeling of not knowing his father — and that its resolution is not consolation but genuine understanding, arrived at through grief
  • Widely considered a companion piece to Edward Scissorhands (1990) in Burton’s filmography — both films about men whose nature makes full human connection impossible and beautiful at the same time
  • Marion Cotillard appears in a small early-career role as Josephine, years before her international breakthrough in La Vie en Rose (2007)
