[English] Denis Villeneuve is a French-Canadian film director and screenwriter widely regarded as one of the most visually inventive and technically accomplished filmmakers of the 21st century. He has received seven Canadian Screen Awards as well as six Academy Award nominations (including Best Director for Arrival), five BAFTA Award nominations, and two Golden Globe Award nominations. His films have grossed over $2 billion worldwide. Villeneuve began his career in Quebec cinema with French-language dramas before expanding into English-language thrillers (Prisoners, Sicario) and science fiction epics (Arrival, Blade Runner 2049, Dune). Known for his meticulous visual style, long takes, precise mise-en-scène, and exploration of human trauma and identity, Villeneuve has been compared to Christopher Nolan as one of the only directors to balance critical prestige with commercial success.
