She journeys barefoot across the scorching desert, surviving starvation and predators, until she reaches Mogadishu and the sanctuary of her grandmother.
At fifteen, she is sent to London as a maid for her uncle, the Somali ambassador. When the regime collapses and her uncle flees, Waris is left undocumented, homeless, and working as a cleaner at McDonald’s. A serendipitous encounter with photographer Terry Donaldson propels her into a modeling audition. Her striking beauty—etched with the resilience of the desert and the wisdom of a survivor—captivates the fashion world. She becomes the face of Revlon, graces Parisian runways, and appears on countless magazine covers.
