Every year on March 14, the International Day of Mathematics (IDM) celebrates the beauty and importance of math in our everyday lives. While many of us know this date as “Pi Day”—because 3/14 matches the famous number $π \approx 3.14$—UNESCO officially expanded it in 2020 to celebrate the entire world of mathematics. IDM is about more than just numbers and formulas; it’s a day to see how math helps us solve big global challenges like climate change and AI, as well as the little things we do every day. From measuring ingredients for a recipe and counting calories to estimating travel time or balancing a budget, math is always by our side. Through fun activities in schools and museums worldwide, this day reminds us that mathematics truly is everywhere, connecting us all.

From Pi Day to International Day of Mathematics

The tradition of Pi Day began on March 14, 1988, at the San Francisco Exploratorium. It was the brainchild of physicist Larry Shaw, who noticed the clever connection between the date and the mathematical constant: in the U.S. format, March 14 is written as 3/14, matching the first three digits of $π \approx 3.14$. To celebrate, Shaw and his colleagues famously marched around the museum’s circular spaces and capped off the event by eating fruit pies—a delicious pun on the word “Pi.” Since then, Pi Day has grown into a beloved global celebration featuring pie-eating, pi-recitation contests, and a wide range of creative mathematical activities.

UNESCO Proclamation (2019)

November 26, 2019: UNESCO’s 40th General Conference proclaimed March 14 as the International Day of Mathematics, expanding Pi Day to include the whole spectrum of mathematics.

Key reasons for the proclamation:

• Celebrate the beauty and importance of mathematics
• Showcase mathematics’ essential role in everyone’s life
• Highlight mathematics’ contribution to achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
• Reinforce UNESCO’s two priorities: Africa and Gender Equality
• Address global challenges: artificial intelligence, climate change, energy, sustainable development

2019年11月26日：UNESCOの第40回総会が3月14日を国際数学デーとして宣言し、円周率の日を拡大して数学の全スペクトルを含めました。

宣言の主な理由：
