Synopsis /

[English / 英語] In the waning days of World War II, 10-year-old Johannes “Jojo” Betzler (Roman Griffin Davis) is a fervent, if clumsy, member of the Hitler Youth, guided by his eccentric imaginary friend: a buffoonish Adolf Hitler (Taika Waititi). Jojo’s worldview is shattered when he discovers his mother, Rosie (Scarlett Johansson), is secretly harboring a Jewish teenage girl, Elsa (Thomasin McKenzie), behind a hidden wall in their home. Initially terrified by the “monster” described in Nazi propaganda, Jojo begins a series of cautious interrogations with Elsa, only to find his indoctrination crumbling in the face of her humanity. As the war closes in and tragedy strikes, Jojo must choose between the blind loyalty of his childhood fantasy and the dangerous, life-affirming courage of his mother’s resistance. The film asks: Can a child’s heart outgrow the architecture of hate? What is the true cost of a mother’s silent rebellion? And can innocence survive the collapse of an empire, emerging not into darkness, but into a dance of freedom?
