March 31 “International Transgender Day of Visibility.”
Created 2009 by American transgender activist Rachel Crandall, this day makes transgender people’s existence visible, raises awareness discrimination and difficulties they face, celebrates transgender community achievements.
World has estimated 25 million transgender people. They people whose gender identity differs from sex assigned at birth.
Transgender people face serious discrimination and violence. Many countries, legal protection insufficient, medical access restricted, employment-housing discrimination. Particularly transgender women, and transgender people of color experience violence high rates.
And transgender children face even more complex difficulties.
Children beginning understanding their gender identity need family, school, society understanding and support. However, often they face misunderstanding, rejection, bullying.
For this special day, recommending 2020 released documentary film Little Girl (original title: Petite Fille).
This work French film director Sébastien Lifshitz documentary, following 7-year-old transgender girl Sasha and her family one year.
Sasha biologically born male, but she knows she’s girl. And her family—mother, father, 3 sisters—unconditionally accept and support Sasha.
This work centers transgender child’s perspective, extremely sincerely and delicately depicted. No sensational depiction, just one girl’s daily life and family love quietly reflected.
This work won 2020 Berlin International Film Festival Teddy Award Jury Special Prize, received high praise France domestically-internationally. 2021 also released Japan, moved many audiences’ hearts.

Sébastien Lifshitz French documentary film director, long career depicting LGBTQ+ people’s lives. Previous works include Wild Side (2004), Invisible (Les Invisibles, 2012), Bambi (2013). Little Girl his latest work.

Transgender Children Reality
Transgender children children whose gender identity differs from sex assigned birth. Some children express gender identity from very young age.
Medical community currently recognizes “gender dysphoria” (feeling discomfort between assigned sex and gender identity). Treatment includes psychological support, social transition (using preferred name and clothes), and puberty blockers (medications delaying puberty).
However, transgender children face many difficulties. Family misunderstanding or rejection, school bullying, society prejudice, medical access restrictions—these affect children’s mental health and development.
France Legal Situation
France relatively progressive LGBTQ+ rights. Same-sex marriage legalized 2013. However, transgender people’s rights still many issues.
Name-gender change requires long legal procedures. Minors particularly difficult. Also, some schools and institutions don’t easily accept transgender children.
Sasha’s mother film fights these legal-social barriers.

世界には、推定2500万人のトランスジェンダーの人々がいると言われています。彼らは、出生時に割り当てられた性別とは異なるジェンダーアイデンティティを持つ人々です。
