Gil Pender is a successful but unfulfilled Hollywood screenwriter vacationing in Paris with his fiancée Inez and her wealthy parents. While Inez shops and dines with pompous pseudo-intellectual Paul, Gil wanders rain-soaked streets dreaming of the 1920s—Paris’s “golden age” when Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and Gertrude Stein transformed art and literature. One night at midnight, a vintage Peugeot mysteriously appears and transports Gil to the Jazz Age. Suddenly, he’s drinking with Hemingway, discussing writing with Fitzgerald, attending Gertrude Stein’s salon, and falling for Picasso’s mistress Adriana. As Gil escapes nightly into the past, he confronts uncomfortable truths: his engagement is loveless, his nostalgic fantasy might be escapism, and every era romanticizes the one before it. When Adriana reveals she dreams of escaping to the Belle Époque 1890s, Gil realizes the “golden age” isn’t a time—it’s a mindset. Nostalgia is denial. The only time worth living is now. Gil chooses rainy midnight walks in present-day Paris over fantasies of the past or a comfortable but soul-crushing future with Inez.
