[English] Oliver Hirschbiegel is the director who made the most formally serious and most culturally consequential attempt in the history of German cinema to represent Adolf Hitler as a human being—and who thereby, as a secondary consequence, produced the scene that became the foundation of the internet’s most pervasive political comedy meme. The specific irony—that maximum historical seriousness produced maximum internet comedy—is not incidental to Downfall‘s achievement but its confirmation: a film so formally complete in its representation of the specific human texture of the Nazi leadership that its central scene could function in any cultural context where an authority figure receives catastrophically bad news, which is to say, in virtually any human cultural context at all.
