[English] Park Chan-wook is a South Korean film director, screenwriter, and producer renowned for his stylistically bold, morally complex films that explore themes of revenge, violence, and human nature. After studying philosophy at Sogang University and working as a film critic, Park made his directorial debut with The Moon Is… the Sun’s Dream (1992). He gained international recognition with Joint Security Area (2000), which became the highest-grossing Korean film at the time. Park achieved worldwide acclaim with his “Vengeance Trilogy”: Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002), Oldboy (2003), and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (2005). Oldboy won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival and became a cult classic, inspiring a Hollywood remake. His subsequent films include the vampire romance Thirst (2009, Cannes Jury Prize winner), the English-language psychological thriller Stoker (2013), and the erotic thriller The Handmaiden (2016), which earned critical acclaim and numerous awards. Decision to Leave (2022) won him the Best Director award at Cannes. Known for his meticulous visual compositions, extreme violence juxtaposed with dark humor, operatic storytelling, and exploration of moral ambiguity, Park is considered one of the most important contemporary filmmakers and a key figure in the Korean New Wave cinema movement.
