Aaron Sorkin’s Screenplay and Subsequent Development
Aaron Sorkin, who wrote this work’s screenplay, would later create mega-hit TV drama The West Wing. In fact, many elements deleted from The American President‘s early screenplay were utilized in The West Wing Season 1.
Both works share many commonalities. Idealistic White House staff depiction, gun control legislation issues, military operation concept of “proportional response,” and themes of president’s personal conflicts and political responsibility balance overlap.
Interestingly, Martin Sheen played A.J. MacInerney Chief of Staff in this work but would play protagonist President Josiah Bartlet in The West Wing. Multiple actors including Anna Deavere Smith and Joshua Malina appeared in both works.
Behind-Scenes Production and Robert Redford
This work originally began when actor Robert Redford approached multiple screenwriters with one-line idea: “president elopes.” Aaron Sorkin wrote treatment, beginning screenplay writing with Redford starring. First draft reached massive 385 pages (normal film screenplay is 120-140 pages).
However, when Rob Reiner joined as director, Redford dropped out. Officially attributed to directional differences: “Reiner wanted film about politics, Redford wanted romance film.” Sorkin himself later analyzed: “Redford perhaps felt character’s political stance was too close to his own, and in final press conference scene president would shed skin and Robert Redford himself would emerge preaching to nation.” After Redford’s departure, Michael Douglas was decided as lead.
For this work, large-scale White House set including East and West Wings was built at Culver City studio. They visited White House five times with permission from Clinton administration, but filming was prohibited, so production designer and art director each memorized one side of Oval Office and recreated it—this anecdote exists. This set was later used in Nixon, Independence Day, and The West Wing.
Relationship with President Clinton
Often said “Bill Clinton is model,” but this isn’t accurate. Protagonist President Andrew Shepherd himself isn’t modeled on specific real person but ideal liberal president image depicted by Sorkin and Reiner.
However, Louis Rothschild, Domestic Policy Advisor played by Michael J. Fox, is said to be modeled on Clinton aide George Stephanopoulos (current TV host). In fact, staff from Clinton, Bush, Obama, Biden administrations stated being influenced by this work and later The West Wing.
Connection to Actual American Politics
This work’s 1995 release was during President Bill Clinton’s first term midpoint. Clinton, also as centrist Democrat, was attempting to balance environmental protection and crime measures, with political situation reflected in this work’s reality at that time.
In 2013, President Barack Obama at White House Correspondents’ Dinner mentioned New York Times columnist comparing this work with his own gun control legislation efforts, joking to Michael Douglas: “Were you merely actor in Aaron Sorkin’s liberal fantasy?”
