[English] James Mangold is an American film director, screenwriter, and producer known for his versatility across genres and his ability to craft character-driven narratives within commercial frameworks. After studying film at Columbia University and CalArts, Mangold made his feature debut with the indie drama Heavy (1995). He gained mainstream recognition with Cop Land (1997), Girl, Interrupted (1999, which earned Angelina Jolie an Oscar), and the romantic thriller Identity (2003). Mangold achieved critical and commercial success directing the Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line (2005), which earned five Oscar nominations including Best Picture. He successfully revitalized the X-Men franchise with The Wolverine (2013) and Logan (2017), the latter earning an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay, a rare honor for a superhero film.
