Tourism Power Overcoming Crisis — Age and Foreign Lands, All New Beginnings
February 17 is “Global Tourism Resilience Day.” This international day established by UN General Assembly 2023 recognizes tourism industry resilience (recovery capacity, robustness) strengthening importance, aims promoting sustainable tourism.
Word “resilience” means “ability successfully adapting even in difficult situations,” “recovery capacity,” “strength.” Originally psychology term analyzing individual characteristics, currently used concept including entire community recovery process.
2020-2021 COVID-19 pandemic dealt devastating blow to tourism industry. According to UN, cumulative losses global tourism industry suffered during these 2 years reached $3.6 trillion (approximately ¥460 trillion). UN acknowledges tourism as “industry receiving greatest pandemic blow.”
Global Tourism Resilience Day established aiming recovery from such crises, tourism industry strengthening preparing for future crises. National governments, UN agencies, academic-research institutions, private sector recommended strengthening tourism resilience on this day.
Additionally, UN General Assembly also resolved designating 2027 as “International Year of Sustainable and Resilient Tourism.”
Tourism positioned as cross-sectional industry contributing to SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) through economic growth, poverty alleviation, employment creation plus environmental protection, regional culture promotion, rural development, improving quality of life for women, youth, indigenous peoples.

Also, Evelyn’s words—”India place overflowing with light, colors, smiles. People regard life not as right but as blessing.”
This shows Western values versus Eastern values difference. In Britain, people regard life as “natural right.” However, in India, people appreciate life as “given blessing.”

2月17日は、「Global Tourism Resilience Day（世界観光レジリエンスデー）」です。2023年に国際連合総会で制定されたこの国際デーは、観光産業のレジリエンス（回復力・強靭性）強化の重要性を認識し、持続可能な観光の推進を目指すものです。
「レジリエンス（resilience）」という言葉には、「困難な状況にあっても上手く適応する能力」「回復力」「強さ」といった意味があります。もともとは心理学で個人の性質を分析する用語でしたが、現在では地域社会全体の復興過程を含む概念として使われています。
2020年から2021年にかけての新型コロナウイルスのパンデミックは、観光産業に壊滅的な打撃を与えました。国連によると、この2年間で世界の観光産業が被った累計損失額は、**3.6兆ドル（約460兆円）**に及びます。国連は、観光を「パンデミックで最も大きな打撃を受けた産業」と認めています。
世界観光レジリエンスデーは、こうした危機からの回復と、将来の危機に備えた観光産業の強靭化を目指して制定されました。各国政府、国連機関、学術・研究機関、民間セクターは、この日を機に観光のレジリエンス強化に努めることが推奨されています。
また、国連総会は2027年を「International Year of Sustainable and Resilient Tourism（持続可能でレジリエントな観光の国際年）」と定めることも決議しています。
観光は、経済成長、貧困の緩和、雇用の創出に加えて、環境保護、地域文化の促進、農村の開発、女性・若者・先住民などの生活の質の向上など、SDGs（持続可能な開発目標）に貢献する横断的な産業であると位置づけられています。
この世界観光レジリエンスデーに観る映画として、2011年公開のイギリス・アメリカ・UAE合作映画『マリーゴールド・ホテルで会いましょう』（原題：The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel）を推奨します。

本作の舞台となったマリーゴールド・ホテルは架空のホテルですが、インドには実際に、マハラジャや貴族の宮殿を改装したヘリテージホテルが数多く存在し、現在も成功を収めています。

ヘリテージホテルとは、昔のマハラジャ（藩王）や貴族の邸宅・宮殿・離宮を宿泊施設に改装したホテルのことです。
これらのホテルは、特にラジャスタン州、グジャラート州、マディアプラデシュ州などに数多く存在します。
ヘリテージホテルの魅力は、単に豪華であるだけでなく、その歴史的価値と文化的価値にあります。マハラジャたちが繁栄を謳歌した古き良き時代の世界を、現代に伝えているのです。
映画のロケ地:
映画『マリーゴールド・ホテルで会いましょう』のロケ地となったのは、インド・ジャイプールの「ラウラ・ニューアス・ケンプール（Rawla Narlai Kempurまたは Ravla Khempur）」という実在のホテルです。
