February 25 is “International Cochlear Implant Day.”
This day commemorates February 25, 1957, when French physicians Charles Eyries and André Djourno performed world’s first cochlear implant surgery. Since 2009, Spanish cochlear implant user organization “Federación AICE” advocated this day, now celebrated worldwide.
Cochlear implant revolutionary medical device providing sound perception to people with severe-profound hearing loss. Unlike conventional hearing aids amplifying sound, cochlear implants bypass damaged inner ear hair cells, converting sound waves to electrical signals directly stimulating auditory nerve.
World Health Organization (WHO)’s “World Report on Hearing” evaluates cochlear implants as “one of most successful neuroprosthetic devices ever developed.” Currently, over 700,000 people worldwide use cochlear implants, but only 1 in 20 people who could potentially benefit actually use them.
Cochlear implants help deaf children learn speaking and hearing, improve workplace communication abilities for adults, enable hearing loved ones’ voices, enjoying music, experiencing nature sounds. Also improve safety and situational awareness by hearing alarms and traffic sounds.
However, cochlear implants not merely medical technology. They raise profound questions about identity, culture, and meaning of “hearing.”
Choosing cochlear implants for some Deaf community members means departure from Deaf culture. Deaf community views hearing loss not as “disability to cure” but identity possessing unique language (sign language) and culture.

This work’s director Darius Marder born 1974, American film director-screenwriter.
This work became feature directorial debut, but previously active as screenwriter. His representative work includes The Place Beyond the Pines (2012) starring Ryan Gosling screenplay.
Sound of Metal originally project “Metalhead” director Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine, The Light Between Oceans) nurtured. Actual metal band “Jucifer” members planned appearing as themselves, but project stalled.
Subsequently, Cianfrance’s friend Marder inherited project. Marder rewrote screenplay with brother Abraham Marder, spent 13 years finding perfect cast.
Marder introduced innovative sound design this work. He closely collaborated sound editor Nicolas Becker enabling audience literally “hearing” Ruben’s experience.
This work’s success earned Marder 93rd Academy Awards Best Original Screenplay nomination.
Production Background
This work filmed early to late 2018, near Boston, Massachusetts (mainly Ipswich).
Filming completed merely 24 days (non-consecutive). Marder director producing limited budget, decided each scene maximum 2 takes.
During filming, cast-crew closely collaborated Deaf community. Sign language coordinators constantly on-site ensuring ASL accuracy.
Also, this work’s drum performances, Ahmed himself performing. He received intensive lessons from professional drummers, actually performed all drum tracks used in film.
Release and Acclaim
This work world premiere screened September 6, 2019 Toronto International Film Festival Platform Prize section.
Subsequently, Amazon Studios acquired distribution rights. Originally scheduled August 14, 2020 theatrical release, but COVID-19 pandemic delayed, November 20, 2020 limited theatrical release, December 4 Amazon Prime Video streaming began.
This work acclaimed by critics, Rotten Tomatoes achieved 97% critics approval rating. 52 film critics selected 2020 best 10.

What Makes It Exceptional
Innovative Sound Design
This work’s greatest characteristic is innovative sound design.
Sound editor Nicolas Becker used various experimental techniques recreating Ruben’s auditory experience.
Becker meticulously researched actual experiences of hearing-impaired people and cochlear implant users, reflected in sound design. Sound when wearing cochlear implant surprisingly realistic. Robotic voices, intermittent noise—these based on actual cochlear implant users’ experiences.
Also, this work “silence” important sound element. Not complete silence but subtle environmental sounds and tinnitus-like sounds used, expressing Ruben’s inner world.
This sound design enables audience literally “experiencing” auditory world Ruben experiences.

Riz Ahmed’s Performance
Protagonist Ruben Stone played by Riz Ahmed born 1982, British actor-rapper.
He appeared Hollywood blockbusters like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) Bodhi Rook role, Venom (2018) Carlton Drake role, but particularly highly evaluated for independent film acting.
For this work, Ahmed underwent intensive training 8 months. Daily 2 hours American Sign Language (ASL) lessons, 2 hours drum lessons, 2 hours personal training, remaining time spent with acting coach.
Marder director demanded Ahmed “trust instincts,” prohibited watching dailies during filming, script analysis. This enabled Ahmed always approaching acting with fresh sensations.
He delicately performs Ruben’s despair, anger, confusion, final acceptance.
Particularly impressive is his “silence acting.” Many scenes, Ahmed doesn’t speak dialogue. However, his expressions, body movements, silence tell everything.
Ahmed’s performance acclaimed, nominated 93rd Academy Awards Best Actor. Also nominated Golden Globe Award Best Actor (Drama), BAFTA Award Best Actor, won Independent Spirit Award Best Actor.

制作背景
本作は、2018年初頭から後半にかけて、マサチューセッツ州ボストン近郊(主にイプスウィッチ)で撮影されました。
撮影は、わずか24日間(非連続)で行われました。マーダー監督は限られた予算で制作していたため、各シーンの撮影は2テイクまでと決めていました。
撮影期間中、キャストとスタッフは聴覚障害者コミュニティと緊密に協力しました。手話コーディネーターが常に現場にいて、ASLの正確性を確保しました。
また、本作のドラムパフォーマンスは、アーメド自身が演奏しています。彼は、プロのドラマーから集中的なレッスンを受け、映画で使用されるすべてのドラムトラックを実際に演奏しました。
