English Darius Marder is an Academy Award-winning filmmaker who rose to fame with Sound of Metal (2019). Raised in a spiritual Gurdjieff commune in Massachusetts, his worldview was shaped by the philosophy of “intentional labor.” His deep connection to his grandmother, who became deaf late in life, inspired his 13-year journey to bring Sound of Metal to the screen. Known for his uncompromising commitment to authenticity, Marder spent an unprecedented 23 weeks on sound design to simulate the subjective experience of deafness. He represents a new wave of independent cinema that prioritizes emotional truth and sensory immersion over commercial appeal.
