Greek Tragedy Oedipus Rex Relationship
Park Chan-wook director clearly conceived Oldboy as Oedipus Rex homage. Protagonist’s name “Oh Dae-su” in Korean sound evokes “Oedipus.”
Oedipus Rex synopsis: Thebes King Laius receives oracle “killed by son,” abandons born son mountain. However son (Oedipus) picked up by shepherd, raised another country’s prince. Adult Oedipus receives oracle “will kill father, marry mother,” leaves hometown (thinking place) avoiding it. However journey途中 quarrels old man (real father Laius) kills, solves Sphinx riddle becomes Thebes king, marries widowed queen (real mother Jocasta). Eventually plague spreads, investigating cause, unknowingly killed father married mother revealed. Jocasta suicides, knowing truth Oedipus blinds own eyes.

Choi Min-sik Embodying Madness and Sorrow Acting
This work’s greatest strength: Choi Min-sik’s overwhelming acting ability. 15-year confinement transformed man’s madness, revenge obsession, daughter love, and final despair—all these, Choi Min-sik perfectly expresses using all expression, body, voice.
For filming gained-lost weight, received 6 weeks martial arts training, performed most stunts himself, Choi Min-sik’s dedicated attitude breathes life into this role.
Yoo Ji-tae’s Cold Avenger Acting
Woo-jin role Yoo Ji-tae’s acting also magnificent. Initially, Park Chan-wook director envisioned older actor Han Suk-kyu, but Choi Min-sik himself recommended Yoo Ji-tae.
Yoo Ji-tae plays cold calculating god-like omnipotent avenger, yet final elevator scene showing tears and despair, he also victim. Young beautiful appearance overlaps ancient Greek immortal gods image, emphasizes contrast with aged Oh Dae-su (human).
Shocking Story Structure
Story structure perfect. Beginning mysterious 15-year confinement, revenge process gradually revealing truth, finally audiences and Oh Dae-su simultaneously knowing shocking truth—this structure skillfulness can be called mystery film’s highest peak.
Symbolic Visual Beauty
Park Chan-wook director’s visual sense fully demonstrated this work.
Confinement room’s claustrophobia, corridor fight scene’s dynamism, Woo-jin’s penthouse unrealistic beauty, and final snow landscape (filmed New Zealand) tranquility—all visually express story emotion.
Particularly, Woo-jin’s yoga pose scene, according director expresses “Apollo god image.” Painting-like perfection, symbolizes his superhuman-divine nature. Woo-jin lives high-rise building penthouse, wiretapping devices sees through everything, manipulates Oh Dae-su’s fate god-like. Like ancient Greek gods overlooking human world manipulating destiny.

ギリシャ悲劇『オイディプス王』との関係
パク・チャヌク監督は、『オールドボーイ』を明確に『オイディプス王』のオマージュとして構想しました。主人公の名前「オ・デス」は、韓国語で「オイディプス」を想起させる音になっています。
『オイディプス王』のあらすじ：テーバイの王ラーイオスは「息子に殺される」という神託を受け、生まれた息子を山に捨てます。しかし息子(オイディプス)は羊飼いに拾われ、別の国の王子として育てられます。成人したオイディプスは「父を殺し、母と結婚する」という神託を受け、それを避けるために故郷(と思っている場所)を離れます。しかし旅の途中で老人(実の父ラーイオス)と口論になり殺害し、スフィンクスの謎を解いてテーバイの王となり、未亡人となっていた王妃(実の母イオカステ)と結婚します。やがて疫病が流行し、その原因を調べる中で、自分が知らずに父を殺し母と結婚していたことが明らかになります。イオカステは自殺し、真実を知ったオイディプスは自らの目を潰します。
原作漫画との違い
映画『オールドボーイ』は、土屋ガロン原作、嶺岸信明作画の日本の漫画『Old Boy』(1996-1998)を大幅に脚色した作品です。
原作漫画の設定：

優れている点
チェ・ミンシクの狂気と悲哀を体現する演技
本作の最大の優れた点は、チェ・ミンシクの圧倒的な演技力です。15年間の監禁によって変貌した男の狂気、復讐への執念、娘への愛情、そして最後の絶望――これらすべてを、チェ・ミンシクは表情、身体、声のすべてを使って完璧に表現しています。
撮影のために体重を増減させ、6週間の格闘訓練を受け、ほとんどのスタントを自ら行ったチェ・ミンシクの献身的な姿勢が、この役に命を吹き込んでいます。
ユ・ジテの冷徹な復讐者の演技
ウジン役のユ・ジテの演技も見事です。当初、パク・チャヌク監督は年上の俳優ハン・ソッキュを想定していましたが、チェ・ミンシク自身がユ・ジテを推薦しました。
ユ・ジテは、冷徹で計算高く、神のような全知全能の復讐者を演じながらも、最後のエレベーターシーンで見せる涙と絶望によって、彼もまた被害者であることを示します。若く美しい外見が、古代ギリシャの不死の神々のイメージと重なり、年老いたオ・デス(人間)との対比を強調しています。
衝撃的なストーリー構成
物語の構成は完璧です。15年間の監禁という謎から始まり、復讐の過程で徐々に真実が明らかになり、最後に観客もオ・デスと同時に戦慄の真実を知る――この構成の巧みさは、ミステリー映画の最高峰と言えます。
象徴的な映像美
パク・チャヌク監督の映像センスは、本作でも存分に発揮されています。
