Introduction
On November 26, 2019, UNESCO’s 40th General Conference established January 14 as World Logic Day.
This date was chosen to honor two greatest logicians of 20th century: Kurt Gödel’s death anniversary (January 14, 1978) and Alfred Tarski’s birthday (January 14, 1901).
World Logic Day aims to highlight logic’s intellectual history, conceptual importance, and practical significance. UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay stated significance of this day:
“In 21st century—and right now—logic is crucial for our societies and economies. Computer science and information communication technologies are rooted in logical and algorithmic reasoning.”
Logic is study of principles of correct reasoning.
And there’s film that tests logical thinking to extreme limits—2014 Australian film Predestination.
This work is based on Robert A. Heinlein’s 1959 short story “‘—All You Zombies—’”. Heinlein wrote this story in one day—July 11, 1958.
Philosopher David Lewis praised this short story as “perfectly consistent time travel story.” Carl Sagan cited it as work that “makes readers deeply think about causality’s nature and time’s arrow.”
Predestination is ultimate logic puzzle.

Robert A. Heinlein’s Original “All You Zombies”
Robert A. Heinlein is one of 20th century’s greatest sci-fi writers. Left many masterpieces including The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress and Starship Troopers.
“‘—All You Zombies—’” was written in just one day on July 11, 1958. Heinlein submitted this short story to Playboy magazine, but it was rejected. Finally published in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction in March 1959.
Title meaning:
Taken from line near story’s end. Protagonist thinks: “I know where I came from—but where did all you zombies come from?”
Heinlein had written “By His Bootstraps” in 1941, 18 years earlier, exploring similar themes. “All You Zombies” further developed those themes.
Spierig Brothers’ Film Adaptation
Michael Spierig and Peter Spierig are German-Australian twin film directors.
On May 14, 2012, announced Spierig Brothers would direct Predestination. They had already completed script.
Peter Spierig stated in August 2014 interview:
“We remained faithful to Heinlein’s 1959 short story. We didn’t try to deconstruct story logic that’s over 50 years old. If there was way to deconstruct logic, someone would have done it in these 50 years. So we decided ‘Let’s trust short story and its logic.’”
Spierig Brothers absolutely trusted Heinlein story’s logical consistency, adapted it almost as-is.
What Makes It Exceptional
Sarah Snook’s Astonishing Performance—Jane and John
Sarah Snook plays three different personalities alone:
Jane (young woman): Lonely, ambitious girl raised in orphanage
John (man): Man after gender reassignment surgery, harboring anger and hatred
“The Unmarried Mother” (writer): Confessional magazine columnist
Snook portrayed each personality with completely different voice, posture, expression.
Sarah Snook broke out with this film. After this film, won Emmy for Succession, became one of Hollywood’s top actresses.
Ethan Hawke’s Quiet Strength—Bartender/Agent
Ethan Hawke played time travel agent with restrained, introspective performance.
Hawke’s character shows almost no emotion outwardly. But his eyes hold deep loneliness, exhaustion, resignation.
Hawke was nominated for Academy Award Best Supporting Actor in 2014 for Boyhood (directed by Richard Linklater). Predestination released same year, showcased Hawke’s acting range.
Logical Consistency—Perfectly Consistent Time Loop
Predestination’s greatest strength is its logical consistency.
Many time travel films have logical contradictions. But Predestination, like Heinlein’s original, constructs perfectly consistent causality.
Spierig Brothers trusted Heinlein’s logic as “no one could deconstruct for over 50 years,” kept it as-is.
After watching film, audience realizes: all pieces fit together perfectly. Not a single contradiction.
From logic perspective, this is astonishing achievement.
Cinematography and Design—High Quality Despite Low Budget
Cinematographer Ben Nott brilliantly recreated 1970s New York noir atmosphere.
Despite low budget, art design is highly refined:
