March 28, 1881, P.T. Barnum and James A. Bailey merged their circuses, “Barnum & Bailey Greatest Show on Earth” born. Barnum already 1871 launched “P.T. Barnum’s Grand Traveling Museum, Menagerie, Caravan, and Hippodrome,” began using name “greatest show on earth,” but Bailey merger completed massive three-ring circus. Later 1919 merged with Ringling Brothers becoming “Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus,” until 2017 closing 146 years continued symbolizing American entertainment.
This circus single-handedly created P.T. Barnum (1810-1891) throughout life called himself “showman”—”I am showman. No gold leaf makes me anything else.” Lies, bluff, genius publicity art gathered audiences, somewhere cheerfully lived between fraud and innovation. His life still provokes pros-cons.

Production Background — 8-Year “Passion Project”
2009, when Jackman hosted 81st Academy Awards, producers discussed “Jackman resembles Barnum” starting point. Jackman expressed Barnum interest, producers immediately began screenplay development.
However Hollywood reluctant original musical films—atmosphere “no precedent original musical selling without existing brand 23 years,” project repeatedly shelved. 2016 La La Land‘s great success finally pushed, production green-lit.

制作背景——8年越しの「パッション・プロジェクト」
2009年、ジャックマンが第81回アカデミー賞の司会を務めた際、プロデューサーたちが「ジャックマンはバーナムに似ている」と話し合ったことが発端でした。ジャックマンはバーナムへの関心を表明し、プロデューサーたちはすぐに脚本開発に着手します。
