Biography | 経歴
[English] David Bowie was the most formally inventive and culturally transformative major popular music artist of the twentieth century. His genius lay in his revolutionary understanding of the performing persona as a primary artistic instrument, driven by a visual intelligence and a formal courage that allowed him to abandon commercially successful identities to pursue radical reinvention. From the cultural explosion of Ziggy Stardust to the avant-garde formal summit of the Berlin Trilogy (Low, “Heroes”, Lodger), Bowie consistently pushed the boundaries of rock and electronic music. His acting career reached its pinnacle in Nagisa Oshima’s Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (1983), where his ethereal presence transcended the medium. His final masterpiece, Blackstar (2016), released just before his death, earned five posthumous Grammys and stands as the most formally accomplished artistic farewell in the history of popular music.
