Synopsis / あらすじ

[English / 英語] In South Boston, the state police wage war on the Irish-American organized crime syndicate led by Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson). Young undercover cop Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) is tasked with infiltrating Costello’s inner circle, while at the same time, Costello’s protégé Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) infiltrates the police force as a mole. As both organizations become aware of a leak, Billy and Colin are plunged into a lethal game of cat-and-mouse, each desperately trying to uncover the other’s identity before their own is exposed. The film masterfully explores the erosion of self, a relentless chain of betrayal, and the devastating cost of a life lived in deception. It asks: What is the ultimate psychological price of a double life? What does trust mean in a world of mirrors? And what remains of one’s identity when the mask becomes the reality?

Critical Reception / 批評的評価

  • Rotten Tomatoes: 90% (Critics), 95% (Audience)
  • Metacritic: 85/100 (Universal Acclaim)
  • IMDb: 8.5/10
  • Eiga.com(映画.com): 4.1/5
  • Scorsese’s Best Director Oscar — his first, after five previous nominations — was universally regarded as overdue recognition of the defining American crime filmmaker of his generation
  • Leonardo DiCaprio’s performance as Costigan praised as his finest to that point — a performance of sustained, deteriorating psychological pressure, a man losing himself in real time
  • Mark Wahlberg’s Sergeant Dignam — sharp, foul-mouthed, the film’s most purely entertaining presence — cited as one of the decade’s great supporting performances; his Oscar nomination was considered deserved by many who felt he was the film’s true scene-stealer
  • Jack Nicholson’s Costello — a performance of deliberate, controlled excess — divided opinion: some praised it as a career capstone, others found it too theatrical for the film’s naturalistic register
  • Thelma Schoonmaker’s editing — her fourth Oscar nomination for a Scorsese film, and her third win — praised as the invisible engine of the film’s sustained tension
  • The Rolling Stones’ “Gimme Shelter” over the opening and the film’s use of rock music throughout praised as Scorsese’s most precisely deployed soundtrack since GoodFellas
  • Roger Ebert.com: ★★★★ “Scorsese reminds us he can still generate more pure tension than almost anyone working”
  • The New York Times: “A masterwork — Scorsese at the full command of his powers”
  • Variety: “The best American crime film in years — lean, savage, and completely controlled”
  • The Guardian: ★★★★★ “A film of tremendous energy and moral seriousness — Scorsese’s return to form”
  • The film is a remake of the Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs (2002) — a fact that generated significant discussion about the relationship between the two films; most critics concluded that Scorsese’s film is a genuine reimagining rather than a copy, transplanting the mechanism into a specifically Boston Irish-American context that gives it different moral weight
  • Compared to GoodFellas (1990) as Scorsese’s two defining statements on the American crime film — GoodFellas as elegy, The Departed as trap
