Synopsis / あらすじ

[English / 英語] In the final years of the Edo period, Shinnojo Mimura (Takuya Kimura) serves as a low-ranking food taster for the Lord of the Unasaka domain. Though his position lacks prestige, he leads a peaceful life with his devoted wife, Kayo. This tranquility is shattered when Shinnojo consumes poisoned shellfish and loses his sight permanently. As he sinks into despair, Kayo seeks help from an influential senior official, Shimada, to secure Shinnojo’s livelihood—only to be coerced into a demeaning affair. Upon discovering the betrayal and the official’s deception, the blind Shinnojo is forced to reclaim his “Ichibun” (one’s honor and pride). He takes up his sword for a final duel, posing a profound question: How does a man without sight challenge an opponent he cannot see, and what remains of a samurai when everything but his dignity is lost?

[日本語] 幕末、海坂藩。三村新之丞（木村拓哉）は、藩主の「毒見役」を務める下級武士でした。暮らしは質素ながらも、愛する妻・加世と穏やかな日々を過ごしていましたが、ある日、毒のある貝を口にしたことで新之丞は永久に視力を失ってしまいます。絶望に打ちひしがれる夫を支えようと、加世は藩の有力者・島田に助けを求めますが、それを機に卑劣な罠に嵌められ、代償として貞操を奪われてしまいます。島田の不義と欺瞞を知ったとき、盲目の新之丞は、武士としての誇り——「一分」を懸けて立ち上がることを決意します。目が見えない男が、見えない敵といかにして戦うのか。すべてを失った者が最後に守り抜こうとした、真の尊厳とは何かを本作は問いかけます。
