[English] Bruno Ganz is the actor who played an angel so completely that strangers treated him as one, and who played Adolf Hitler so completely that he concluded, at the end of four months of research, that Hitler had no heart. These two formulations are the most economical summary of what his career achieved: the total inhabitation of opposite extremes of the human condition by the same technical and emotional intelligence, across a career of sixty years, in the service of directors who collectively constituted the greatest generation of European art cinema. The specific quality that made both performances equally convincing is the same quality: the complete dissolution of the performing self into the interior reality of the character—and the formal precision to make that interior reality visible to an audience without explaining it.
