After the Nixon administration wins an injunction against the New York Times, the responsibility shifts to the Washington Post. Publisher Katharine Graham, who inherited the paper and has yet to fully assert her authority, faces a harrowing choice: publish and risk legal ruin, imprisonment, and the end of her career, or remain silent. While Editor Ben Bradlee pushes for publication, lawyers and the board urge caution. The film is a study of a decision made in a single afternoon, shaped by years of deference and self-doubt, highlighting the fragile but essential relationship between a free press and a functioning democracy. Spielberg filmed this project in a remarkable nine months, fueled by a sense of contemporary urgency.
