In the 1980s, a Korean immigrant family pursuing the American Dream moves from California to rural Arkansas. Father Jacob bets on his dream of owning his own farm, but farming on barren land proves extremely difficult, testing family bonds. Mother Monica’s anxiety, their two children’s confusion, and the presence of unconventional grandmother Soon-ja brought from Korea—the Korean vegetable ‘minari’ that grandmother plants by the creek takes root and grows anywhere. This family, too, puts down new roots in a strange land while preserving their heritage. Director Lee Isaac Chung’s autobiographical work. A touching family story questioning immigrant struggles, hope, and what ‘home’ truly means.
