Synopsis / あらすじ

[English / 英語] The film tracks five children—Francisco, Anthony, Bianca, Daisy, and Emily—from different cities and backgrounds, all of them in schools that are failing to serve them. Their parents have applied to charter schools, which use lottery systems to assign the limited available spots. The film interweaves their stories with a critique of American public education: the systemic obstacles to school reform, the role of teachers’ unions, and models like the Harlem Children’s Zone that demonstrate the potential of education when these barriers are removed. The documentary culminates in the lottery drawings, where the children’s immediate academic paths are determined by the impartial mechanics of a randomized selection.
