[English] Michael Douglas is an American actor and producer who stepped out of the shadow of a legendary father to become a defining screen presence of his own—the master of the charismatic, morally compromised American male. The elder son of Kirk Douglas, he studied drama at UC Santa Barbara and first found fame on television as Inspector Steve Keller in The Streets of San Francisco (1972–76). But his breakthrough came behind the camera: in 1975 he produced One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest—having acquired the rights from his father—and won the Academy Award for Best Picture. As an actor, he built a body of work around flawed, driven men: the adventurer of Romancing the Stone (1984), the terrorized adulterer of Fatal Attraction (1987), and above all the ruthless financier Gordon Gekko of Oliver Stone’s Wall Street (1987), whose creed “greed is good” won Douglas the Oscar for Best Actor. A run of provocative thrillers followed—Basic Instinct (1992), Falling Down (1993), Disclosure (1994)—alongside subtler work in The American President (1995), Wonder Boys (2000), and the Oscar-winning Traffic (2000). In 2013 his portrayal of Liberace in Behind the Candelabra won him a Primetime Emmy, and a new generation met him as Hank Pym in Marvel’s Ant-Man films (2015–2023).
