[English] Edward Norton is an American actor and filmmaker renowned for the intensity and intelligence of his performances and his uncompromising, often chameleonic approach to his craft. Born in 1969 in Boston and raised in the planned community of Columbia, Maryland—designed by his grandfather, developer James Rouse—he was drawn to acting from early childhood. He studied history at Yale, worked briefly in Osaka, Japan, then moved to New York to pursue the stage, earning a place in Edward Albee’s Signature Theatre company. His film career began with a bang: chosen over two thousand hopefuls, he made his debut as the stuttering altar boy Aaron Stampler in Primal Fear (1996), a star-making turn that won him a Golden Globe and an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He confirmed his range almost immediately, playing a reformed neo-Nazi in American History X (1998)—for which he gained thirty pounds of muscle and earned a Best Actor nomination—and the unnamed insomniac narrator of the cult classic Fight Club (1999). Over the following decades he became one of his generation’s most respected actors while also directing (his debut Keeping the Faith in 2000, and later Motherless Brooklyn in 2019) and founding the production company Class 5 Films.
