March 21, 1989, Iwatsuki, Saitama) is a Japanese actor known for his athletic action work and his equally assured turns in delicate romantic and dramatic roles — a versatility that has made him one of Japan’s leading actors of his generation. Scouted in Harajuku as a high-school sophomore, he made his acting debut in the late-night drama Princess Princess D (2006) and rose to prominence the following year starring in the tokusatsu series Kamen Rider Den-O (2007), which he still calls his origin point.

Satoh built a strong television following through the baseball drama Rookies (2008) and NHK’s historical epic Ryomaden (2010), in which his intense turn as the assassin Izo Okada drew wide notice. His defining role came with the live-action Rurouni Kenshin film series (2012–2021), where he played the wandering swordsman Kenshin Himura across five films over a decade. Performing his own demanding sword choreography, he was praised at home and abroad and won the inaugural Japan Action Award for Best Action Actor, cementing his status as one of the country’s finest action performers.

Beyond action, Satoh has shown remarkable range: the period drama The Emperor’s Cook (2015), the tearjerker The 8-Year Engagement (2017) and the crime drama To Those Who Left Us (2021) each brought him major Best Actor honors, including two Japan Academy Film Prize nominations.
