[English] Viggo Mortensen (Viggo Peter Mortensen Jr., b. October 20, 1958, New York City) is an American-Danish actor known for his intense commitment, chameleon-like range, and preference for challenging roles over commercial ones. The son of a Danish father and American mother, he spent much of his childhood in Venezuela, Denmark, and Argentina, becoming fluent in several languages. After graduating from St. Lawrence University and training in theater, he made his film debut in Peter Weir’s Witness (1985) and spent the 1990s in supporting roles in films such as Carlito’s Way (1993), Crimson Tide (1995), The Portrait of a Lady (1996), and G.I. Jane (1997).

International stardom arrived when he was cast, at short notice, as Aragorn in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001–2003). His grounded, physically committed performance became one of the franchise’s defining elements and shared in its SAG ensemble honors. Rather than pursue blockbusters, Mortensen deliberately chose demanding material, forging a celebrated partnership with director David Cronenberg on A History of Violence (2005), Eastern Promises (2007) — which earned his first Academy Award nomination for Best Actor — and A Dangerous Method (2011).

He gained two further Best Actor nominations, as an off-the-grid anarchist father in Captain Fantastic (2016) and as Tony Lip in the Best Picture winner Green Book (2018). In 2020 he made his directorial debut with Falling, which he wrote, directed, scored, and starred in, and in 2022 played cave diver Rick Stanton in Ron Howard’s Thirteen Lives. Beyond acting, Mortensen is a published poet, exhibited painter and photographer, and recording musician; in 2002 he founded Perceval Press to publish little-known artists and authors.
