[English] Simon Wincer (b. 1943, Sydney) is an Australian film and television director who has worked extensively in both Australia and the United States since the early 1970s, best known for horse-centred dramas, sweeping Westerns, and family adventures. As a young man he joined the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, working his way up from the mailroom to floor manager, cameraman, and eventually fill-in director, before spending several years directing theatre in London. Returning to Australia, he directed more than 200 hours of television across the 1970s on series such as Homicide, Matlock Police, and The Sullivans.

Wincer moved into features at the end of the decade, earning AACTA/AFI Award nominations for Best Direction for the thriller Harlequin (1980) and, most notably, for Phar Lap (1983), a beloved biographical drama about the legendary Australian racehorse that reflected his lifelong passion for horses. After the American sci-fi film D.A.R.Y.L. (1985) and the World War I drama The Lighthorsemen (1987), his growing reputation led to Lonesome Dove (1989), the acclaimed four-part CBS Western miniseries based on Larry McMurtry’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and starring Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones. The series was a major critical and commercial success, and Wincer won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing.

A passion for horses and the natural world. From Phar Lap to Free Willy to The Young Black Stallion, Wincer returned repeatedly to stories of animals and the bonds between humans and the natural world, handling them with warmth and mass appeal.
