March 22, 1982, Richmond, Virginia) is an American actress, celebrated as one of the leading figures of a new generation of Asian American performers and an outspoken advocate for representation in Hollywood. The third of four daughters of Taiwanese immigrant parents — her father a professor, her mother a computer programmer — she developed a passion for acting early and earned a BFA in acting from the State University of New York at Purchase before moving to New York and later Los Angeles to pursue the craft.

After early roles in independent Sundance features and the web series EastSiders, Wu’s breakthrough came in 2015 with the ABC sitcom Fresh Off the Boat, in which she played the fierce, fast-talking matriarch Jessica Huang. Loosely based on chef Eddie Huang’s memoir, it was the first American network sitcom in over twenty years to center on an Asian American family, and Wu’s performance earned wide acclaim and multiple Critics’ Choice Television Award nominations across the show’s run (2015–2020).
