[English] Robert Mulligan (Robert Patrick Mulligan, August 23, 1925 – December 20, 2008) was an American film and television director, best known for humane, sensitive American dramas — above all his classic adaptation of To Kill a Mockingbird. Born in the Bronx, New York, he studied at Fordham University and served with the United States Marine Corps during World War II. After the war he worked briefly in the editorial department of The New York Times before entering television, starting as a messenger at CBS and rising rapidly to become a director of live TV drama during the medium’s “golden age,” working on prestigious anthology series and winning an Emmy for the 1959 production The Moon and Sixpence, which marked Laurence Olivier’s American television debut.

Mulligan made his feature film debut with Fear Strikes Out (1957), the story of troubled baseball player Jimmy Piersall, starring Anthony Perkins — the first of many collaborations with producer Alan J. Pakula. The Mulligan-Pakula partnership reached its peak with To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), the beloved adaptation of Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize–winning novel; the film won three Academy Awards, including Best Actor for Gregory Peck, and earned Mulligan an Academy Award nomination for Best Director. He and Pakula continued with a string of well-regarded films including Love with the Proper Stranger (1963), Inside Daisy Clover (1965), and Up the Down Staircase (1967).

Over a career of some twenty features, Mulligan showed a particular gift for depicting the emotional lives of children and adolescents facing difficult truths. His major later films include the enormously popular nostalgic romance Summer of ’42 (1971), for which he received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Director; the unsettling horror film The Other (1972); the two-hander romance Same Time, Next Year (1978); and Clara’s Heart (1988). He closed his career with the tender coming-of-age drama The Man in the Moon (1991), which featured Reese Witherspoon in her film debut. The elder brother of actor Richard Mulligan, he was admired less for a flashy personal style than for his craftsmanship and his ability to draw natural, deeply felt performances from his casts. He died in Lyme, Connecticut, in 2008 at the age of 83.

Mulligan was a self-effacing “actor’s director” who did not impose a flashy visual signature; instead he was prized for his sensitivity, restraint, and skill in serving the story, drawing natural and emotionally truthful performances from his casts across many genres.
