[English] Nicole Newnham and James LeBrecht are American documentary filmmakers who co-directed the Academy Award–nominated documentary Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution (2020). The two had collaborated for some fifteen years — Newnham as a director and producer, LeBrecht as her sound designer and mixer — before joining forces as equal creative partners on Crip Camp, the project that would bring both their widest acclaim.

Nicole Newnham is an Emmy-winning documentary director and producer and a Stanford graduate, known for socially engaged, historically rich films. She instigated, co-produced, and directed The Rape of Europa (2006), about the Nazi plunder of European art, which was shortlisted for an Academy Award and nominated for a Writers Guild Award; co-directed The Revolutionary Optimists (2013), a Sundance award winner about children fighting poverty in India; and produced groundbreaking virtual-reality documentaries with artist Lynette Wallworth, including Collisions, which won an Emmy for Outstanding New Approaches to Documentary. She later directed the acclaimed The Disappearance of Shere Hite (2023).

James LeBrecht is a film and theater sound designer, mixer, author, and lifelong disability rights activist with more than three decades of experience and credits on well over a hundred films — including work across documentary and narrative cinema. Born with spina bifida and a wheelchair user, he began in theater as resident sound designer at Berkeley Repertory Theatre and co-authored a widely used textbook on sound design for the stage. As a teenager in 1971, he attended Camp Jened, a summer camp for young people with disabilities that became a seedbed of the disability rights movement — the experience at the heart of Crip Camp. Crip Camp marked LeBrecht’s directorial debut; told largely from his point of view, and with LeBrecht himself both a co-director and an on-screen subject, the film premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award, and was released by Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Productions.
