[English] Mira Nair (b. October 15, 1957, Rourkela, Odisha, India) is an Indian-American director, producer, and screenwriter, one of the most acclaimed independent filmmakers of her generation, celebrated for vibrant, humane films about people living between cultures and on the margins of society. Raised in India and influenced early on by theater, she studied at Delhi University — where she began acting — and then at Harvard University, where a course with cinéma-vérité pioneer Richard Leacock drew her to documentary filmmaking. She made several documentaries, beginning with her thesis film Jama Masjid Street Journal (1979), before turning to narrative features.

Nair announced herself to the world with her debut feature Salaam Bombay! (1988), a gritty, unforgettable portrait of street children in Mumbai made on a tiny budget; it won the Caméra d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. She used the film’s profits to found the Salaam Baalak Trust, a charity for street children in India. She followed with Mississippi Masala (1991), an interracial romance starring Denzel Washington, and built a career moving fluidly between independent and studio cinema, and between India and the West.

Nair reached her greatest acclaim with Monsoon Wedding (2001), an exuberant ensemble comedy-drama about a Punjabi wedding, which won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival — making Nair one of the few women ever to receive the honor. She went on to direct Vanity Fair (2004), the beloved Jhumpa Lahiri adaptation The Namesake (2006), Amelia (2009), and The Reluctant Fundamentalist (2012); she famously turned down an offer to direct a Harry Potter film in order to make The Namesake. Her true-story Disney drama Queen of Katwe (2016), about a Ugandan chess prodigy, starred Lupita Nyong’o and David Oyelowo. She later directed the acclaimed BBC/Netflix miniseries A Suitable Boy (2020) and developed Monsoon Wedding into a stage musical. A committed activist and mentor, Nair founded the Maisha Film Lab in Kampala, Uganda, to train emerging East African and South Asian filmmakers, and often works with her longtime screenwriting collaborator Sooni Taraporevala.
