The Truman Show saw social media coming before social media existed. Gattaca seeded three decades of bioethics discourse. Lord of War documented the arms trade with the accuracy of journalism. Good Kill examined drone warfare at the moment the institutional conversation about it was beginning. The commercial director who spent ten years making thirty-second worlds learn to make feature-length worlds with the same economy—and whose most commercially successful film was the one that wasn’t his to direct.
