[English] Maksym Nakonechnyi is a Ukrainian director, producer, and screenwriter, and one of the leading voices of a new generation of Ukrainian cinema that came of age in the shadow of war. Born in 1990 in Odessa, he earned a degree in directing in 2012 from the Kyiv National Karpenko-Kary University of Theatre, Cinema and Television—the country’s foremost film school, where students were urged to fight for a distinct national artistic identity. After several years working across Ukrainian television, he co-founded the independent Kyiv- and Odessa-based production company Tabor, which produces documentaries, feature films, theatre, and social video. As a producer, his credits include Alina Gorlova’s acclaimed documentary This Rain Will Never Stop (2020), which won Best Feature at the Festival dei Popoli in Florence. Nakonechnyi’s own feature directorial debut, Butterfly Vision (2022)—the story of a female aerial-reconnaissance soldier returning from captivity in the Donbas—premiered in the Un Certain Regard section of the 75th Cannes Film Festival, thrusting him and Ukrainian cinema into the international spotlight just months after Russia’s full-scale invasion. Rooted in documentary practice and a deep engagement with the ongoing war, his work is marked by an unflinching yet humane attention to trauma, dignity, and survival, and by a commitment to telling Ukraine’s story on its own terms.
