Thirteen-year-old Amy (Anna Paquin) survives a car accident that kills her mother and is sent to live with her estranged father Thomas (Jeff Daniels) in Ontario, Canada — a sculptor and inventor she barely knows. When a construction crew destroys a nearby wetland, Amy finds an abandoned nest of goose eggs, hatches them herself, and becomes the mother the goslings have imprinted on. They will follow no one else. Thomas — who builds ultralight aircraft — realizes that if Amy doesn’t teach the geese their migration route, they have none. She will have to fly them south herself. Fly Away Home is based on the true story of Bill Lishman, who successfully led a migration of Canada geese by ultralight aircraft in 1993. Director Carroll Ballard — who made The Black Stallion — brings to it the same quality of patient, wide-open attention: a film that trusts the landscape, trusts the animals, and trusts a child to carry it. Caleb Deschanel’s cinematography received an Academy Award nomination. The moment when Amy and her geese emerge from the mist over Baltimore is one of the most purely beautiful images in American family cinema.
