Synopsis / あらすじ
[English / 英語] In 1962 New York, Tony Lip (Viggo Mortensen), a street-smart Italian-American bouncer, is hired as a chauffeur for Dr. Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali), a world-class African-American pianist, for a concert tour through the Midwest and Deep South. Relying on “The Negro Motorist Green Book” to find safe havens in a segregated era, the two men must navigate a landscape of escalating racial hostility. As Dr. Shirley is celebrated on stage yet denied basic dignity in the very venues he performs, Tony witnesses the profound injustice of Jim Crow laws. Despite their initial friction—born of differences in class, temperament, and worldview—the journey fosters an unexpected and life-changing friendship. Based on a true story, the film explores the courage required to confront prejudice and the power of empathy to dissolve the barriers between us.

Critical Reception / 批評的評価
- Rotten Tomatoes: 79% (Critics), 93% (Audience)
- Metacritic: 69/100 (Generally Favorable)
- IMDb: 8.2/10
- Mahershala Ali’s performance as Don Shirley universally praised — a portrait of dignity, loneliness, and suppressed fury rendered with extraordinary restraint
- Viggo Mortensen’s physical and vocal transformation into Tony Vallelonga widely admired; his willingness to embrace the character’s flaws without apology cited as a key to the film’s tonal balance
- Kris Bowers’ score — rooted in jazz and blues, composed with Ali’s coaching on the piano sequences — considered one of the most elegant musical contributions of the year
- The film’s warm, accessible tone celebrated by general audiences; the gap between critic and audience scores reflects a genuine debate about the film’s approach to its subject matter
- Some critics argued the film centers the white character’s journey at the expense of the more complex Black protagonist — a criticism associated with the “white savior” framework in Hollywood storytelling
- Don Shirley’s surviving family members disputed elements of the film’s portrayal and stated they were not consulted during production; the conversation around these objections forms part of the film’s critical legacy
- Roger Ebert.com: ★★★½ “A crowd-pleasing film that earns its crowd”
- The New York Times: “Charming and funny… but it lets its audience off the hook”
- The Atlantic: “An old-fashioned film with a new-fashioned subject”
- Variety: “Warm, smart, and irresistibly entertaining”
- The debate around Green Book‘s Oscar win — versus Roma, BlacKkKlansman, The Favourite, and If Beale Street Could Talk — became one of the most substantial critical conversations of that awards season, centering on how Hollywood chooses to tell stories about race
