[English] Jason James Richter (b. January 29, 1980, Medford, Oregon) is an American actor and musician who rose to worldwide fame as a child star in the Free Willy franchise. Discovered for his first commercial at the age of three — a Japanese producer cast his “all-American boy” quality in a series of TV advertisements aimed at the Japanese market — he grew up between Oregon, Hawaii, and Los Angeles before breaking into features.

His life changed at twelve when he was chosen out of more than 4,000 candidates to play Jesse, the troubled foster boy who bonds with a captive orca, in Free Willy (1993). The film became an unexpected global sensation and a cultural touchstone, and Richter earned a Young Artist Award for the role. He reprised Jesse in both sequels, Free Willy 2: The Adventure Home (1995) and Free Willy 3: The Rescue (1997), and stayed busy through the 1990s in films such as Cops & Robbersons (1994), The NeverEnding Story III (1994), and Laserhawk (1997).
