October 28, 1967, Smyrna, Georgia) is an American actress and producer, one of the most beloved and bankable movie stars of her generation and among the defining Hollywood leading ladies of the 1990s and 2000s. Born to parents who ran an acting and writing workshop, she moved to New York after high school and worked as a model before pursuing acting. Her early performances in Mystic Pizza (1988) and, especially, Steel Magnolias (1989) — which earned her first Academy Award nomination — marked her as a rising talent.

Roberts became a global superstar with the romantic comedy Pretty Woman (1990), opposite Richard Gere, a phenomenon that won her a Golden Globe and a second Oscar nomination and established her as the era’s definitive romantic-comedy lead.
