It is summer 1965 on New Penzance Island, a fictional speck off the New England coast. Twelve-year-old Sam Shakusky, an orphan and outcast in his Khaki Scout troop, has penned secret love letters to Suzy Bishop, a bespectacled girl who reads fantasy novels in her binoculars and carries a record player wherever she goes. Sam wears his scout uniform like armor; Suzy wears her disdain for her lawyer parents like a badge. They are misfits in a world that doesn’t want them. So they run. Armed with a stolen canoe, Suzy’s six fantasy books, camping supplies, and a battery-powered record player spinning French pop, they paddle to a secluded cove they christen Moonrise Kingdom. For three perfect days, they dance on the beach, pierce each other’s ears with fishhooks, and promise to be together forever—twelve-year-olds playing house in a wilderness cathedral. But the adult world cannot tolerate children who refuse its script. Scout Master Ward mobilizes his troop. Police Captain Sharp (who is also Suzy’s mother’s lover) leads the manhunt. Social Services, a woman so cold she has no first name, arrives to institutionalize Sam. As a catastrophic hurricane barrels toward the island, the search party closes in. In Wes Anderson’s symmetrical, color-saturated fable, love is the only rebellion that matters—and sometimes, the only way to survive a flood is to build an ark for two.
