Adapted from the Pulitzer Prize-winning biography American Prometheus, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer chronicles the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy), the American theoretical physicist who led the Manhattan Project’s effort to develop the first atomic bomb during World War II. Weaving across multiple timelines, the film follows Oppenheimer from his restless university years, through his direction of the secret Los Alamos Laboratory and the world-altering Trinity test of July 1945, to his postwar fall from grace — when his opposition to the hydrogen bomb and past left-wing associations culminated in the humiliating 1954 security hearing that stripped him of his clearance. Framed against a parallel narrative of Atomic Energy Commission chairman Lewis Strauss (Robert Downey Jr.), the film is less about the bomb’s blast than the moral reckoning of the man who built it: a study of genius, ambition, guilt, and the terrible knowledge that one has changed the world forever.
