[English] Ryan Murphy (b. November 9, 1965, Indianapolis, Indiana) is an American television and film producer, director, and screenwriter, and one of the most prolific and influential creators in modern American television — often described as among the most powerful figures in the medium. Raised in an Irish Catholic family in Indianapolis, he studied journalism at Indiana University Bloomington and worked as a journalist, including an internship at The Washington Post, before turning to screenwriting in the 1990s.

Murphy’s first produced creation was the teen comedy series Popular (1999–2001), followed by the dark plastic-surgery drama Nip/Tuck (2003–2010), which won a Golden Globe and established his taste for provocative, boundary-pushing storytelling. His cultural breakthrough came with the musical comedy-drama Glee (2009–2015), co-created with Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, a global phenomenon. He and Falchuk then launched the horror anthology American Horror Story (2011– ), which spawned a signature “anthology” model he would reuse across American Crime Story, Feud, and later Monster.

Though known overwhelmingly for television, Murphy directed and co-wrote the feature film Eat, Pray, Love (2010), starring Julia Roberts, as well as the HBO film adaptation of Larry Kramer’s play The Normal Heart (2014), which won the Emmy for Outstanding Television Movie.
