Synopsis / あらすじ

[English] Kumail is a Pakistani-American comedian working the Chicago stand-up circuit, avoiding the traditional arranged marriage candidates his family constantly introduces to him. One night, he meets Emily at his show, and the two quickly fall into a deep, unspoken relationship. However, when Emily discovers that Kumail has been hiding her from his traditional family, she abruptly ends things. Shortly after, Emily falls seriously and rapidly ill, forcing doctors to place her into a medically induced coma. Kumail rushes to the hospital and chooses to stay, where he is forced to face Emily’s arriving parents, Beth and Terry—who have no reason to trust or like him. The film follows the crucial weeks that unfold within and outside the hospital waiting room.
