Synopsis / あらすじ
[English (Short Synopsis)] March 1953. After three decades of ruling the Soviet Union through absolute terror, Joseph Stalin collapses and dies at his dacha. What follows is a vicious, absurd scramble for power among the men who spent years living in his shadow. Nikita Khrushchev, the shrewd political survivor; Georgy Malenkov, the vain yet weak successor; Lavrentiy Beria, the sadistic secret police chief; and Vyacheslav Molotov, the loyalist whose devotion borders on the fanatical. They are all complicit in the machinery of purges and gulags, but with the tyrant gone, the terror apparatus they built begins to turn inward.
The film unfolds like a pitch-black farce: grown men bickering over funeral protocols and seating arrangements while the nation remains paralyzed. Beneath the surface-level absurdity lies genuine horror; the machinery of arrest and execution never truly stops. As Beria moves to seize control by feigning reform, Khrushchev must outmaneuver him by forging an alliance with the formidable Marshal Zhukov. The Death of Stalin is a masterful satire on the banality of evil—a chilling look at how a dictatorship begins to devour its own the moment the Great Leader falls.
[日本語（あらすじ）] 1953年3月。30年もの間、絶対的な恐怖によってソビエト連邦を支配してきた独裁者、ヨシフ・スターリンがダーチャ（別荘）で倒れ、急逝しました。その直後に幕を開けたのは、長年彼に怯えて生きてきた側近たちによる、悪意と不条理に満ちた凄まじい権力争奪戦でした。
狡猾な政治家フルシチョフ、虚栄心が強く優柔不断な後継者マレンコフ、全閣僚の弱みを握る残忍な秘密警察長官ベリヤ、そして私情を捨てて独裁者に尽くす忠臣モロトフ。彼らは皆、粛清や収容所といった負の歴史に加担してきた「怪物」たちです。しかし、暴君の死によって、彼らが築き上げてきた恐怖の装置は、今や彼ら自身の方へと牙を剥き始めます。
