Synopsis / あらすじ

October 2003. Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg, after being dumped by his girlfriend, builds a site called Facemash in a single night — ranking the attractiveness of female students using photos pulled from campus directories. The site crashes Harvard’s servers. It also attracts the attention of the Winklevoss twins, who approach Mark with an idea for a Harvard-exclusive social network.
Mark begins working on what becomes The Facebook instead, without telling them. Co-founder Eduardo Saverin funds the operation. Sean Parker, the founder of Napster, arrives and reshapes the company’s ambitions. The film tells this story from the perspective of two simultaneous depositions — the Winklevoss lawsuit and the Saverin lawsuit — intercut with the events themselves. What actually happened is never definitively established. What is clear is that by the time Facebook went global, several people who had been present at the beginning were no longer in the room.

しかしマークは彼らに告げることなく、独自に「The Facebook」の開発に着手します。共同創業者エドゥアルド・サヴェリンが資金を提供し、やがてナップスター創設者のショーン・パーカーが加わったことで、事業は巨大な野心へと塗り替えられていきます。映画は、ウィンクルボス兄弟とサヴェリン、それぞれが起こした二つの訴訟の証言録取が進む「現在」と、創業期の「過去」を交錯させながら進行します。真実は最後まで藪の中ですが、一つだけ確かなことがあります。それは、Facebookが世界を制した時、始まりの場所にいた人間の幾人かは、もうその場にはいなかったということです。
