[English] Lana Wachowski (b. 1965) and Lilly Wachowski (b. 1967) are American filmmakers, collectively known as the Wachowskis, who for most of their careers have worked as a writing-and-directing team. Born and raised in Chicago to a businessman father of Polish descent and a nurse-and-painter mother, the siblings grew up immersed in comic books, fantasy and science-fiction literature, martial arts, and philosophy — influences that would run through all of their work. After working in construction and writing for Marvel comics, they broke into film as screenwriters before making their directorial debut with the sleek neo-noir crime thriller Bound (1996).

Their second film, The Matrix (1999), was a global phenomenon. A dazzling fusion of cyberpunk science fiction, Hong Kong martial-arts action, groundbreaking “bullet time” effects, and philosophical and religious ideas, it redefined the action genre and won four Academy Awards, earning the Wachowskis the Saturn Award for Best Director. They wrote and directed two sequels, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions (both 2003), and shaped the wider franchise, including the anime anthology The Animatrix and video games.
