Virunga tells the gripping and moving true story of the men who risk their lives to protect Virunga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the last refuge of the world’s critically endangered mountain gorillas. Africa’s oldest national park — a place of volcanoes, rainforest, and extraordinary wildlife — Virunga sits in a region long scarred by conflict. The film follows a handful of dedicated park rangers, including the caretaker André Bauma, who tends orphaned gorillas with tender devotion, and chief warden Emmanuel de Merode, as they defend the park against poaching, the eruption of the M23 rebellion in 2012, and the encroaching interests of a British oil company exploring for oil within the park’s borders. As armed conflict engulfs the region and an undercover investigation exposes troubling activity around the oil concession, the rangers find themselves fighting on multiple fronts — for the gorillas, for the park, and for a vision of their country’s future. Director Orlando von Einsiedel originally set out to make an uplifting story about Virunga National Park’s efforts to rebuild through conservation and tourism. But during filming, the M23 rebellion erupted and an investigation — aided by undercover journalist Mélanie Gouby — turned up troubling activity surrounding the British oil company Soco International’s exploration around the park, and the film evolved into something far more dangerous and urgent. Much of the footage was captured under genuine threat, including during armed conflict. Released by Netflix and executive produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, the film became part of a wider campaign; amid mounting international pressure following its release, Soco International announced it would cease operations in the park.
