In 1969, the discovery of Chase Andrews’ body in the North Carolina marshes casts immediate suspicion on Kya Clark, known to the locals of Barkley Cove as the “Marsh Girl.” Abandoned by her family at a young age, Kya has survived for years in isolation, finding kinship in the wildlife and the rhythms of the wetlands.
As she stands trial for murder, the story weaves back through her past, revealing her education in the natural world and her intertwined relationships with two young men, Tate Walker and Chase Andrews. Ultimately, Kya’s journey is a haunting exploration of survival and the profound gap between the laws of nature and the judgments of human society.
日本語 (簡潔なあらすじ)
1969年、ノースカロライナ州の湿地にある火の見櫓の麓で、一人の青年の遺体が発見されます。町の人々が真っ先に疑ったのは、「湿地の少女」と呼ばれるカイア・クラークでした。
幼い頃に家族全員に去られ、湿地の小屋でたった一人、孤独の中に置き去りにされたカイア。彼女は周囲の動植物を友とし、湿地の営みから生きる術を学びました。町の人々から偏見の目で見られる一方で、彼女の純粋さに惹かれた二人の青年、テイトとチェイス。彼らとの出会いが、彼女の運命を大きく揺れ動かしていきます。
殺人事件の裁判が進むにつれ、彼女の過酷な半生と、二人の男性との複雑な関係が明らかになっていきます。自然の摂理（ことわり）の中で生きてきた少女は、果たして人間社会の残酷な裁きを乗り越えることができるのでしょうか。
